If Man Were a Flea – Or: How Does the Flea Manage to Leap That High?

If humans had the same jumping ability as a flea, they would be able to jump 295 ft (90 1000 wide) and 164 ft (l thousand high). What makes the flea that stiff? It would not exist able to achieve this by means of 1'southward muscles alone. The flea has an elastic substance in its joints that helps to catapult information technology into the air. This works like to the pole of a pole vaulter. Shortly before the spring, the pole bends and is nether extreme tension. This helps the vaulter to go high upwardly in the air.

The Best Jumper Among Animals is non the flea

The flea had to pass its title to another creature, because its jumping power is "only" 135 times college than its trunk weight. The tape holder is the meadow froghopper, which has a jumping power 400 times higher than its torso weight. Yet, information technology is not as dangerous to come up beyond one of those animals than a cougar, which could easily jump up to a 2nd flooring balustrade ...

The Best Jumpers?

Information technology is an impressive achievement to spring very high or large distances. Still, there should exist an additional category: the "all-time" jumper – an creature that is particularly nimble, certain-footed and fast and also very good at jumping, a multi-talent, an all-rounder! And who would have thought: These animals cannot exist found in flat, wide plains simply in the mountains.

Blue Sheep and Klipspringer

Some of the best jumpers are the bluish sheep and the klipspringer. The blue sheep lives in Key Asia at heights of 9,842 - 16,404 ft (three,000 – v,000 thou). The klipspringer is at dwelling house in the rocky areas of Africa and the only antelope species walking on the tips of its hooves. With their small hooves, the blue sheep and the klipspringer tin can walk along incredibly narrow cliff edges and use them as jumping platforms. They are not scared of heights. Sometimes the cliffs they land on are not broader than 1.1 inch (three cm).
